The Canyon Mountain N-gineers is for those interested in building an N-scale railroad that models the Union Pacific Railroad from Hinkle, Oregon to Nampa, Idaho.  There may be some Burlington Northern also modeled that represents said railroad's activity in and around Pendleton, Oregon.  Check out the links below that show maps of the proposed layout.  This layout is located in the John Day/Canyon City area of eastern Oregon.  Visitors (volunteers) are welcome.

Family friendly activity in Grant County, Oregon
This is a picture of one of the HO modules.
Below is one of the more recent pictures taken of the layout. This was taken of the Telocaset, Oregon module on or about October 1, 2002.   Enterprise is located behind the backdrop found in the background of this picture.
Below:   This small grain elevator was placed just to give the impression that construction is closer to being finished than it actually is.  This was the state of construction about October 10, 2001.  The grain elevator is on the Telocast module.  The small yard under the light to the right of the picture is Enterprise.  The branch line to Enterprise will be operated from inside the helix behind a screen; therefore, the light will be necessay when the backdrops are replaced.
The following picture of the Telocaset module was taken about  a year before.   Behind the "glacier" is the helix which leads to Telocaset.  Telocaset, Oregon is a summit between LaGrande and Baker City on the Union Pacific mainline.  (On this layout Union will actually be a higher point, but we hope to give the illusion that there is still a high point at Telocaset.)  Helper engines may still be necessary on the layout between LaGrande and North Powder since that section of railroad will have a significant grade to traverse.

In another part of the building that houses the N-scale layout there is an HO layout that consists of 18 modules.  This layout is essentially complete, so most of the effort being expended currently is on the N-scale project. The picture below is a sample of one of the modules specifically constructed with scenery in mind.  For more pictures of the HO layout click on the link below.
This first picture represents Enterprise, Oregon; which is serviced by the Joseph branch line of the Union Pacific out of LaGrande.  Our "Enterprise" is behind a background screen that conceals the helix and the operator who stands inside the helix. Most of the trackage to Enterprise is expected to be hidden.
The photo below will be the site of Union, Oregon.  Nothing is determined as to what buildings will be present, but this picture gives the impression that something is happening at least.
This picture was taken inside the operator pit at Enterprise in May, 2001.
The picture below is looking at the LaGrande module from the Island City side as of November 1, 2001.  This picture shows the same lumber mill as seen in the picture that follows.   The location of all the structures are temporary and subject to adjustment as the layout progresses.  The backgrounds are a composite of pictures that I took with a digital camera, taped together, and stuck to the backdrop.  This idea is still in the experimental stage, but it shows some promise.
Below is a picture of what will be the main LaGrande, Oregon yard area.  The depot will be near the isle on the left where you can see Amtrak cars.  The tracks between the Amtrak cars and the grain train are the two mains.  The tracks to the right of the grain train are the yard tracks that lead to the Joseph (Enterprise) Branch.  The log cars on the right are just behind the sawmill seen in the picture above this one.
The picture below was taken of the Telocaset module with the rebuilt backdrop that hides the Enterprise yard and operator in place. This is the state of construction as of February 10, 2002.   We have installed DCC using the Digitrax Chief II (radio) system.   Progress on the installation of a signaling system if underway,  better lighting overhead has been installed, and  the roof has been fixed (hopefully).

The scene below shows a couple of Union Pacific locomotives exiting Government Gulch just before entering the Telocaset module.
This final picture was taken in the Enterprise yard of the Canyon Mountain N-gineers layout.  It is a Golden West CA-3 caboose kit (built to be a Union Pacific CA-9 caboose).
There is still a tremendous amount of work to be done, so...
